Great News!

In great news, The National Hispanic University has received 2 grants!

The first comes to us from The David & Lucille Packard Foundation in the amount of $200,000.00 in support of the Science and Math Department chaired by Dr. Yazmin Rosa-Bauza.

The second, from the Koret Foundation, is in the amount of $25,000 which is for the Middle College Program coordinated by Prof. Michael Mooney.

WASC Visit

Five WASC visiting team members (two from the previous CPR visit) will be visiting us from February 10-13 for the Educational Effectiveness Review.

NHU’s WASC Steering Committee worked diligently to submit the EER report by November 21st, which is available for you to read - just click the following link: http://www.nhu.edu/newsite/wasc2006/wasc_eer.htm.

Reminder: Since it is imperative that we are all present during the entire EER WASC visit, no vacations will be approved between February10-13.

We are excited to welcome the WASC visiting team to NHU to showcase our programs and ongoing improvement process.

Student Accomplishment

Adriana Rodriguez (current NHU student), adjunct professor Nannette Regua and Patricia Ruiz (current NHU student) have been selected as a panel in the upcoming NACCS (National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies) Conference in New Brunswick, New Jersey in April of this year. They will be presenting a panel on the theme of : Women Breaking Barriers: Mexican Women and Twentieth Century America.

NACCS is the academic organization that serves academic programs, departments and research centers that focus on issues pertaining to Mexican Americans, Chicana/os, and Latina/os. The association was created in 1972 during the peak of the Chicana/Chicano movement.

You will see the girls working on fundraising so please support them. When you see them, ask about their panel and wish them the best of luck.

How wonderful that NHU will be going to the East Coast.

We know you will bring us pride!

Hopefully you have all made a resolution to get the best NHU has to offer you and to give back in some way.

This is the best moment to look back on accomplishments and challenges. Take the accomplishments and make them your guideline. Take the challenges and find better ways of turning them into an accomplishment.

Proof of those who have done this are members of our Familia, Dr. Menezes, Dr. Navarro, Dr. Johnson, Prof. Espinoza and ‘Scape’ Martinez. They were published!

Congratulations! You are true models for us all!

Maybe you won’t publish a book or be famous in other ways, but you can touch someone’s life with your example.

Go out and change someone’s life! In the process you just might change yours!

NHU Familia keeps growing!

It is with great pleasure that we welcome a new faculty member: Dr. Yazmin Rosa-Bauza. Dr. Rosa-Bauza assumed the Chair of the Mathematics and Science Department on Monday, January 5th. Dr. Yazmin Rosa-Bauza is an organic chemist with a Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry at UC Berkeley. Her dissertation focused on the development of chemical tools to monitor the activity of cancer-related proteases. Dr. Rosa-Bauza is a native of Puerto Rico where she attended school before going to Berkeley. Dr. Rosa-Bauza stood out to the selection committee not simply because of her sterling credentials as a scientist but also because she showed the passion for educating our students. She is a wonderful addition to our Familia. Please take a moment to drop by her cubicle in the faculty area and give her a warm welcome.

Please note: Michael Mooney remains as Chair of Computer Science, which will again be a separate department.

WAY TO GO!!

Local Home Depot Partners with LCPA

Approximately 50 volunteers from San Jose area Home Depot stores, as well as volunteers from The Latino College Preparatory Academy (LCPA) joined forces to enhance LCPA’s Go Green Project. The project included the construction of two green houses, planter beds and installation of a drip irrigation system to help with the schools ecology program. All materials used for the project are from local Home Depot stores.

To those who were there to help or to cheer, thank you!

Many of the Home Depot volunteers took time off from work to help beautify LCPA. They came from places like Salinas, Morgan Hill,etc.

Thank you once again for joining us. We should have pictures next week.

NHU and NASA to sign MOU

NASA AMES and NHU will sign a memorandum of understanding this Friday, September 26th.

Our partnership with NASA AMES started in 1997 when we signed our first MOU together. We are excited at the new prospects of our growing relationship.

NHU New Hire

Lilian Zelaya – has joined the Trio Staff as an Educational Talent Search Advisor for Middle School Students. She hails from the east coast having been raised in New York and El Salvador. She is Colombian and Salvadorian. She is the first in her family to obtain a BA and MA. LIlian is a proud alumni from TRIO which helped her pursue higher education. She has earned a BA in Psychology from Sonoma State University and an MA in Social Work from SJSU.
With these 2 degrees, she feels a responsibility to serve her community and be a role model to students who need a mentor.

She has a firm belief that every single student has the capacity to achieve higher education.

She is located on the first floor so stop by and introduce yourself. Make a new friend!

Did you come in this morning missing your burrito? (I sure did!) Heavenly Brew will be closed this week as Teresa is preparing her marketing campaign and will have a long awaited, formal grand opening on August 4^th. Look for some surprises!

Congratulations to all GED and Computer Skills students! With hard work and making time from work and family, they completed their courses and received their certificates on Thursday. What an accomplishment and what a great time had by all!

UNIVISION, AL DESPERTAR! Will be on campus on Thursday, July 31^st. They will be interviewing Faculty, Staff and Students for a program that will be about NHU. It will be in Spanish so if you have a good word to put in, please step up to the mic!

CALLING ALL STUDENTS!! (FACULTY…MAKE SURE TO SHARE WITH YOUR NEW STUDENTS)

THE STUDENT AMBASSADOR’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Fifteen NHU students served as student ambassadors last year. Our ambassadors received a full scholarship for tuition in exchange for ten hours service to the university per week. The program involved all three floors of the university. The Office of Financial Aid monitored the awards, the Scholarship Committee provided oversight, and Michael Ramirez and Tony Fuentes managed the assignments. Each ambassador was assigned to a faculty or staff member to serve the required hours. Ten of the fifteen students improved their GPA’s while serving as ambassadors, and the other five maintained their already high GPA’s. The ambassadors served NHU in the following ways:

1. Served in the President’s Office

2. Worked in the library

3. Coached the debate team

4. Participated in college fairs

5. Gave high school presentation

6. Served at university events

7. Gave campus tours

8. Assisted with helping students apply to university

9. Held their own workshop for the ALAS Conference

10. Served as models for NHU collateral

11. Spoke about their experience at NHU at various functions

12. Helped out with the Upward Bound program

13. Attended Workshops

The university will continue the program for the next academic year (2008-2009). Let Takeo Kubo know if you are interested in participating, either as a student or faculty/staff. A special thanks to Michael Ramirez who suggested the program in order to help students work fewer hours off campus to pay for their educations. The idea worked!

JOB OPPORTUNITY

The Extreme Science Program is looking for NHU students with any science, math, engineering, or teaching experience. Teachers (NHU students) are needed for the academic year 2008-09 to help teach LCPA students in the after school science –enrichment program. NHU students interested in teaching will have to commit to working Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:50pm to 4:20pm. – WE WILL PAY AND TRAIN YOU!

The Extreme Science Program is an after school program for LCPA students providing hands-on training and experience in science, engineering and careers. Activities include electronics, nutrition, ecology, rockets, and solar energy. Students will participate in scuba diving classes and fieldtrips throughout the year.

This Friday July 11, 2008, on behalf of NHU, Gloria Romero (Special Projects), Martha Escalera (SSS) and 7 students will be attending to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Tour at the Santa Clara Medical Center hosted by Asssemblyman Jim Beall Jr. & March of Dimes.

The purpose of this event is to meet premature babies and their moms in person and learn what we, together with March of Dimes, can do to help every baby have a healthy start.

TRIO/UPWARD BOUND NEWS

Upward Bound is going to have an orientation for the students and parents that are going to be attending our summer residential this year. The orientation is going to be on Room 302 from 6-8pm on June 26th.

Upward Bound Summer Residential Staff is going to have a training from June 23rd – June27th here at NHU, including CPR training on June 24th.

Upward Bound Summer Residential is going to start on June 29th – August 1st. The students are going to be sleeping at SJSU, Joe West Dormitories and taking the classes here at NHU from 8-2pm. Pretty much the students are going to be here from 7:30-4:30PM because they are going to be having breakfast and lunch with LCPA.

Assistant Director of El Centro Chicano at Stanford University

Stanford University, recognized as one of the most prestigious and innovative academic institutions in the world, has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director in El Centro Chicano, a division of the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs (VPSA). This department is unique in that the activities of VPSA's units traverse both academic and non-academic areas, providing programs and services focused on student development, intellectual engagement, diversity and multiculturalism, and community building, among others.

Stanford's mission is to educate and develop future leaders and to promote interdisciplinary, world-class research and teaching. This mission and the quality of Stanford's faculty, students and staff make it an intensely creative and rewarding place to work.

The Assistant Director of El Centro Chicano has primary responsibility for designing, executing, and evaluating programs and activities that address the concerns, needs and growth of members of Stanford's Chicano/Latino student community. The Assistant Director supervises and trains 15 to 20 student staff, advises student leaders and officers of 20 voluntary student organizations housed at the center; and manages the center's financial functions and marketing efforts.

Anticipated start date: September 2008.

Job Responsibilities include:

Program Development & Outreach (50%):

* Plan, execute, and evaluate annual cultural, academic, and educational programs with University-wide impact. These include Dia de los Muertos, La Gran Posada, Student/Alumni Symposium, Galarza Lecture/Community Awards Banquet, Parents' Weekend Reception, Cesar Chavez Commemoration, Floricanto.

* Implement on-going programs such as faculty speaker series, alumni speaker series, and community dialogues.

* Design outreach efforts and develop strategies for communication (emails, printed material, web-based content) with the center's constituents-Latino undergraduate and graduate students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff.

* Assist with the center's graduate student programs and initiatives, including El Centro's Graduate Scholars in Residence Program, Latino Graduate Forum, Graduate Socials, and new student programs.

* Create opportunities for graduate student and alumni involvement through mentorship of undergraduates and VSO leaders.

* Assist with the implementation of the Alumni Hall of Fame program and Reunion Homecoming events

* Seek collaboration with University departments to implement programs (social, cultural, educational, or community service) that address the changing needs of Chicano/Latino students.

Supervisory, Budgetary, and Facilities Responsibilities (25%)

* Supervise a student staff of 15 to 20 workers; this includes program, marketing, academic, and computer cluster coordinators, support staff members, as well as students employed through the Federal Community Service Work Study grant.

* Train new student employees and orient them to the theoretical framework that guides the center, and the mission and goals of El Centro.

* Manage the center's operating and gift accounts; allocate money for programs, reconcile budgets; originate and approve all transactions, and ensure that the center stays within spending limits.

* Make purchases of capital and non-capital equipment as necessary.

* Manage facility and usage by El Centro's VSOs and outside organizations.

Student/Organization Advising and Leadership Development (25%)

* Advise voluntary student organizations affiliated with El Centro on major event planning, organizational development, fundraising, recruiting, and University policy as it relates to their activities.

* Work closely with the director and student staff to plan, execute, and evaluate complex programming activities.

* Advise students on how to locate resources necessary to achieve successful programs and build efficient and effective organizations.

* Work with the director to identify student needs, address issues of concern, and build consensus between organizations.

* Advise and serve as a critical resource to students to help them achieve their academic and personal goals.

* Identify, plan and implement leadership development opportunities and community building efforts such as leadership retreats and monthly meetings of voluntary student organizations housed at the center.

* Assist with the execution of the LEAD program, a cross-cultural leadership development program conceived and executed by the ethnic community centers.

Qualifications:

* A Bachelor's degree or equivalent is required; a graduate degree in higher education administration, student affairs or related field is strongly preferred.

* Requires three to five years of directly related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Experience working with students in both an advisory and supervisory capacity is required.

* Knowledge of the challenges faced by undergraduate and graduate students in a highly selective, demanding residential institution required.

* Extensive knowledge of the Chicano/Latino student community at Stanford is strongly preferred.

* Ability to work with minimal supervision and with special attention to detail is mandatory.

* Ability and willingness to learn Stanford financial functions is essential.

* Ability to work with and gain support from a broad and diverse array of constituents, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents and visitors is essential.

* Strong interpersonal and written communication skills and the ability to present information to both small and large groups required.

* Proficiency in oral and written Spanish is highly desirable.

* Willingness to take on new challenges in a dynamic and constantly changing environment is highly desirable.

Craig Swencionis, an NHU transfer student and a member of the 2006 CA Regional Championship Debate Team, has just been accepted to UC Berkeley. He will be majoring in Philosophy in the Fall. He was also awarded the very prestigious Regents Scholarship. Of all entering students, only 200 students receive this award and they are handpicked.

Her Story

Hello my name is Teresa Olivas and I am the owner of Heavenly Brew Coffee bar. We are currently located in Sobrato Hall on the 2nd floor (outside of the SAAC Center). I would like to tell you a little about myself as our journey together begins at NHU.

I worked in High Tech. IBM to be exact for 25 years. Owning a business of my own has always been my dream as I was reaching the end of my career. I worked part time at the Cathedral of Faith coffee shop to learn how to make coffee. I learned about Espresso, Latte and Mocha Drinks. I also took several courses on developing a business plan and how to start your own business. This lead me to NHU, where I took a business class offered through NHU’s Community Education partnered with Women's Initiative.

I had been searching for a good location for my coffee bar business when I realized NHU sold no coffee! Thanks to Santiago Lerma, NHU’s Student Government Association President, who coordinated my negotiations with NHU board members, we were able to bring my coffee bar to your beautiful school.

I look forward to a long and happy relationship with the NHU staff, faculty and students. I would like to invite all NHU faculty, staff and students to stop by for a refreshing drink or something to eat during your busy day. I sell gourmet specialty drinks, sandwiches, hot dogs, smoothies, iced coffee, tea etc.

I would like to encourage all students to focus on your dreams and work hard to make them happen. Everything that is achieved in life requires hard work and much sacrifice to make it happen. You have just begun your journey in life, Make your dreams come true.

Our 23^rd Commencement Exercises went off without a hitch thanks to the great people who put it together. Kudos to our fearless leader, Patricia Estrada who motivated everyone with her upbeat spirit and drive.
